Tell us a little bit about yourself and your business. How did you get started, and what inspired you to use visuals to help grow your business?
Hi, I am Marloes, a visual consultant.
I have always been working in a visual way.
As an urban designer I used my sketches to think better;
As a consultant I used visuals to communicate with greater impact in board meetings, and
As a teacher to explain things better to my students
A few years ago, I discovered that this way of working has a name: Visual Thinking.
When I moved with my family from the Netherlands to Taiwan I started with a clean slate and wanted to do what I love most: create. That's when I started Linesbyloes, a Visual Consulting practice.
How do you use visuals to communicate your ideas or products to your audience?
My visuals are my product. By posting easy to digest visuals, people see that I can explain complex things visually.
Social media platforms where you share your content.
Can you share some specific examples of how using visuals has helped you attract new customers or clients, or helped you stand out from competitors?
I found many clients on Instagram. My account grew a lot recently. All my new clients saw my work on Instagram.
Then, I checked their business profiles on LinkedIn. If it weren't for Instagram, I wouldn't have so many clients.
What tools or software do you use to create and edit your visuals?
Canva, Figma, Pen & paper!
Are there any tips you have for someone who is just starting out and doesn't have a lot of design experience?
Look around for great examples - those that you like. Then try to copy. After that, give it your own twist.
You can not be creative in your computer. I start with pencil first. Just on paper. After that I make it into a computer drawing.
How do you measure the success of your visual content? Do you track metrics like engagement, clicks, or conversions, and how do you use that data to inform future visual content?
I share messages that I believe should be shared, such as those about Optimism, Leadership, and Happiness. I don't pay too much attention to the numbers.
I recently found a fantastic job opportunity through a post that didn't receive much engagement. This way, I draw in the people and types of clients I want to work with.
Do you have any advice for other creators/ solopreneurs who are just starting out and want to use visuals to help grow their business?
It's a big journey, with many ups and downs. Go with the flow, just keep going! Don't give up when you are stuck or having a bad day. Trust me, we all have those.
The key is to learn the tools that get you going again.
Surround yourself with people that encourage and help you.
Join a creative community that helps you and gives honest feedback.
Do, do, do... Try, try, try...
You need a lot of hard work and not so much judgment on your work.
See the world as your playground! :-)
