Jhean Kharl, aka JK Art is an aspiring visual creator who’s been growing steadily online. He is designing some pretty cool visuals and we thought it would be nice to interview a budding designer to share his learning experience & practical tips.
Here’s the interview with JK for 'The Visualizer’.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your business. How did you get started, and what inspired you to use visuals to help grow your business?
My name is JK, short for Jhean Kharl, from Cebu City, Philippines.
I am a visual artist, and I love everything that has to do with art, design, animation, and visual storytelling. I've been doing animation work for more than two years, on both personal and professional projects. For fun, I make YouTube videos where I talk about art and my creative endeavors.
I am also trying to teach other creatives how they can monetize their craft or make a living by doing what they love.
How do you use visuals to communicate your ideas or products to your audience?
I transform complex ideas into a minimalist visual form of content that is easy for my audience to understand and relate to.
Social media platforms where you share your content.
Can you share some specific examples of how using visuals has helped you attract new customers or clients, or helped you stand out from competitors?
Recently I made a visual summary of the book Atomic Habits by James Clear, and I want to make more such summaries. But honestly, I'm still figuring out how I can attract people and turn them into friends and then into customers.
What tools or software do you use to create and edit your visuals?
Canva, Adobe Suite, Sketch drawing
Are there any tips you have for someone who is just starting out and doesn't have a lot of design experience?
Try to explore different tools, methods, and techniques that work best for you and focus on building your system instead of focusing on how to "just" make a good design.
There are a lot of ways you can learn to make designs. Youtube is a great example. Take time to learn it. It is fun!
How do you measure the success of your visual content? Do you track metrics like engagement, clicks, or conversions, and how do you use that data to inform future visual content?
Yes! Every time I publish a piece of content, I keep track of the metrics, i.e., likes, engagement, clicks, or conversions; that way, it will give me information on which content is performing very well. And make another content related to it.
Do you have any advice for other creators/ solopreneurs who are just starting out and want to use visuals to help grow their business?
I'm not sure if I have the authority to give advice because I'm also starting out, but so far, what I can give as "advice" is:
to be consistent with your content,
build authority in the niche you're in,
focus on building a system instead of focusing on your goals,
enjoy what you are doing, and
your craft should have a sense of purpose, whether it makes people feel or realize something.
What are some common mistakes to avoid, or tips for creating visually engaging content on a budget?
I think for you to avoid making mistakes and wasting a lot of time, you can ask someone for help - a mentor, coach, or teacher - who can help you save a lot of time and guide you toward success as a visual content creator.
In terms of budget, the most practical way to make the design is either to do it yourself or to hire someone who can help you transform your best ideas into a visual form of content.
You can hire me ;)
Finally, where can we go to learn more about you and your business, and see some examples of your visual content in action?
